ANTONIO VIANI ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF UNIONE PROPRIETARI GALOPPO

31 January 2025

Last week the newly elected Board of Directors of Unione Proprietari Galoppo met for the first time.
The first decision to be taken, as provided for by the Statute, was the election of President and Vice-President for the three-year period 2025 – 2027, the Board unanimously appointed:

President UPG: Antonio Viani
UPG Vice-Presidents: Moreno Meiohas and Pierangelo Pavesi

‘I thank the Council for the trust that has been confirmed in me ,’ said the new president, ‘which spurs me on to work even better and harder. I am convinced that with the help of my Vice-Presidents and the support of the entire Board we will be able to achieve our goals. I can assure you that the Board is already working at full capacity.

In this regard, I consider the ministerial launch of the procedure to establish the Racecourse Quality Assessment Commission to be very important. This step will lead to the creation of a fundamental controller figure if we really want to reform our sector. We say it is the next step after the publication of the Classification.
We have been saying this for a long time, the issue of racecourses is central and the critical situations we are experiencing at the moment demonstrate this even more. We can no longer allow public subsidy money to be distributed without real control and accountability.
Precisely in order to make an even greater contribution to the success of the above, UPG has made itself available with the Ministry to assist future Commissions made up of tender officials and veterinarians. I believe that the experience of the owners, together with that of trainers and jockeys, would be essential for assessing the facilities from the point of view of their reception and functionality. This is a service that today the UPG and the other Category Associations, through the ANG, already perform in a constructive spirit, given their presence at the various inspections that unfortunately in some racecourses have become an almost weekly constant, but it would be appropriate to think about a change of pace with the inclusion of categories, which would allow the Commissions to work even more effectively and in the end really reward those who, among the racecourses, work best. The sector would benefit greatly.”

UPG, in collaboration with Anac , has undertaken to reissue the Galloping Yearbook. This publication, which recounts in detail what has happened at the gallop, in Italy and elsewhere, in the year that has just ended, represents a great economic and organisational effort for UPG: ‘I believe that promoting horse racing culture is the duty of our Association and an indication of the vitality of the sector,’ concluded Viani.
