Perhaps not what everyone expected, but in the end a product of Italian breeding nevertheless won one of the finals of the Swedish trotting Breeders Crown. Eclipse As, a son of Nuncio and Uppsala As bred by the Serenissima Breeding and owned in Sweden, won the four-year-old event with Ulf Ohlsson on the sulky. Success that came in a form also quite unusual for the typical pattern of Northern European races. Starting with number 1, in fact, the Scandinavian driver held his own pupil in fourth position at the rope, filtering through inside lines until he arrived on the back of the outrunner Bicc’s Tobee and only in the last 70 metres of the race did he find the space to be able to get to the outside, sprint and win with an average of 1.11.3.
Eclipse As was bought at the Its auctions in 2021 by Rejo Liljendhal for 34,000 euros and only last August passed into the hands of Finn Ville Kharulathi after Liljendhal had moved to the USA. For the son of Nuncio, this is the sixth victory in 22 disputed races.
In the other races, Ester degli Dei took second place in the four-year-old female class, with the Hagoort/Bakker trainee leading from the start and only being overtaken by Daim Brodda near the finishing line. Fly Equos Jet and Far Wise as in the three-year-olds’ event were less successful, finishing fifth and seventh respectively.
