Victory by several lengths of margin for White Abarrio trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. who had a truly unforgettable day at Gulfstream Park with two more very important victories, three ‘heavy’ second places and the third again in the Pegasus with Skippylongstocking. White Abarrio, ridden with great confidence by Irad Ortiz Jr., was the second betting favourite, but he dominated with a decisive breakaway at the far post, making himself impregnable even for Locked, who was the most heavily backed betting horse and had to settle for second place at around 8 lengths from the winner. White Abarrio on this same track had won the Florida derby three seasons ago.
The afternoon in Florida also saw a victory for Lanfranco Dettori with Smokin’t in a $100,000 handicap.
